Take the Stress out of Christmas

Christmas is only a few days away, and as the holidays draw closer life inevitably becomes busier and more hectic. Though this period should be all about peace, joy, and love, it can actually be very stressful and cause tensions to rise. Between over-busy schedules and overbearing family members; late nights; spending too much money; and more, it can be easy to let the holidays get on top of you and leave yourself exhausted and run down by the time the new year comes around. However, it doesn’t have to be like this. Here are a few tips on how to stay calm and take the stress out of Christmas.

Have a clear plan

The days leading up to and after Christmas can be extremely chaotic, with any number of parties, family visits, last minute presents to buy, and children to entertain. It’s easy to get overwhelmed sometimes when you have a hundred things to do and not a lot of time to do it in. This is why it’s important to have a clear plan in place so that you know exactly what you need to do and when you’re going to do it.

Taking some time each night, or first thing in the morning, to make a checklist of all the things you need to do the next day will help you instantly feel more organised and prepared, and will make the day run much more smoothly.

It’s okay to say no

The week between Christmas and the new year is usually extremely busy due to the number of events that different people have planned. It’s not uncommon to receive many invitations to things that potentially clash or eat into your time to relax, and cause stress and anxiety about letting people down.

However, it’s important to set boundaries and say no to certain things for the sake of your own wellbeing. Though it’s tempting to try and fit everybody and every event in because they all sound like fun and you also don’t want to upset anybody by declining, if you do everything you will burn yourself out. Go through your invitations and schedule them all in, and see what that looks like. If things clash, choose one and politely decline the other.

Make some me-time

It’s important to give yourself some time during the holidays to simply relax and enjoy the peace and quiet of your own company. Though we love our family and our friends, being around them all from dawn until dusk for days at a time can get a bit much, and can lead to tension and people treading on each other’s toes.

Try to set out just a little bit of time each day to do something for yourself, by yourself. This could be a relaxing bath; watching your favourite tv show or reading a good book; or going for a walk or run. You may feel like there’s no time in your busy schedule to fit some alone time in, but even if it’s only thirty minutes, it’s important. This time will give you a little time to catch your breath and think in peace.

Meditate

Meditation is a perfect activity for that thirty minutes of alone time each day. Mediation helps lower stress and anxiety, and allows us the opportunity to simply sit and focus on our breathing in the peace and quiet, which is important in the chaos of the holidays.

Meditation works best either first thing in the morning or before bed at night. Depending on your schedule, give yourself thirty minutes either when you wake up or before you go to sleep, and take yourself to a quiet space. This practice will help you release any pent-up tension and make you feel relaxed and ready to face the day, or get a good night’s sleep.

Practice Gratitude

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed during the holiday period and to lose track of what is really important. When people are tired and under each other’s feet for days at a time, it can cause tensions to form and for us to forget just how much we love and appreciate the time we spend with our loved ones. Taking some time to pause and reflect can help you keep these things in mind. Practicing gratitude is really important and helps us remember how lucky we are in moments that it’s easy to forget. One way to do this is to keep a ‘gratitude journal’, in which you write down what you are grateful for each night. Or another fun way is to go round the table and have each person say one thing they appreciate; this is great for bringing everybody closer together.

Understanding Dreams About Falling

Welcome to our monthly Understanding Dreams series, where we take a look at the most common dreams we have and what they mean. This month, the theme is falling. This is one of the most common and frightening dreams; it’s estimated that people dream about falling to their deaths on average around five times in their lifetime.

You’ve more than likely experienced the feeling of being woken up suddenly by a jerk after a dream in which you are falling. This feeling has a physiological explanation; as you fall asleep, your blood pressure and heart rate decrease, and this causes the falling sensation. However, these dreams often still have deeper meanings, along with those falling dreams from which you don’t – or can’t – wake up from.

A loss of control

Falling is something that is out of our control; we never intend to fall (unless we jump), and it is something that can lead to hurt or distress. If you dream about falling, it suggests that you are feeling like things in your waking life are slipping from your grasp and that you are losing control of situations that are possibly causing you stress.

To get to the root of what it is that is causing your worries to spill over into your subconscious, it’s important to examine the different areas of your life and find out what it is that is causing you to feel overwhelmed or vulnerable, and unable to control what is happening to you. Perhaps you’re going through a difficult time at work and are under a lot of pressure, or maybe you’re having trouble at home or in your relationship, and you are feeling frustrated because things aren’t going the way you want. Or maybe you’re having difficulty with finances and are worried about what is going to happen.

Any of these things could be causing you to dream about falling. However, it’s also important to examine how you are falling in the dream to figure out exactly what is going on and how you feel about the situation.

Falling because you lost your balance or grip

If you are falling in your dream as a result of losing your balance or grip, it is a sign that the problem lies internally. You may be feeling unstable and unsure of yourself and your abilities, and lacking in confidence. Perhaps you have recently been through a period of change that you feel like you’re not coping with. You need to find a way to recenter yourself and get your confidence back so that you can face the situations and challenges in your life without fear of failure.

holding on tightly

Holding on tightly

If in your dream you are holding on tightly to something or somebody to try to stop yourself from falling, it is a clear sign that you are trying your hardest to hold on to control of a situation in your waking life. You may be in a difficult situation that you are trying to fix, but are failing to do so because somethings are simply out of your grasp and there is nothing you can do about them.

Sometimes, this dream is a message that you are holding onto something that isn’t meant for you, but that you are scared to let go because you don’t know what will happen when you do. Often, this is linked to a relationship; people tend to stay in relationships or cling to an ex simply because they are afraid to be alone or worry they’ll never find anybody else. Or perhaps you’re facing a big change such as a move or a new job, and are clinging on to your old life because you’re scared of what will happen in the future.
Holding on so tightly to the past is causing you stress and pain, and this dream can be a sign that you need to let go. Though it’s scary not knowing what will come next, sometimes taking a leap of faith is what you need.

Falling because you were pushed

If you were pushed in your dream, it is a sign that the feeling of losing control is due to an external issue, such as another person. Do you know who pushed you? If you do, then examine what they are doing in your waking life to make you feel stressed and out of control. The person could be your boss or a colleague who is putting pressure on you at work, or perhaps it’s a loved one who you are at odds with.
This dream could be a sign that you feel like you’re being pushed into doing things you don’t want to do in your life. If you do know the person who pushed you, you need to examine how they make you feel in real life, and what you can do to take back the control or change the status quo.

If you don’t know the person who pushed you, or didn’t see them, it could be a sign that you are pushing yourself too hard and are feeling the negative effects. Are you working too hard? Maybe it’s time to slow down and give yourself a break before you push yourself to breaking point. Take a step back, breathe, and evaluate what you need to do to regain your balance and your control so that you can tackle the problem.

The History of Halloween

Like many of the modern holidays we celebrate, Halloween has roots that stem back thousands of years. The traditions and celebrations we associate with the holiday are actually taken from several different ancient festivals.

The most ancient of those is the Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced SAH-wen), which was widely celebrated around 2,000 years ago. Meaning ‘Summer’s End’, Samhain celebrated the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. At the time, the year was marked in two halves; the light half, and the dark half. Samhain marked the end of the light and the beginning of the dark.

Samhain was one of four Celtic holidays celebrated throughout the year, along with Imbolc, Beltane, and Lughnasadh. These festivals were known as ‘fire festivals’, and in between these came the two Equinoxes and two Solstices. Samhain is celebrated between the Autumn Equinox and Winter Solstice. These festivals were originally celebrated across Scotland, Ireland, and the Isle of Man, before spreading throughout Europe.

Centuries after the original celebrations began, Pope Gregory III decided to move the annual festival celebrated by the Romans to November 1st, and this holiday evolved to become All Saints’ Day. The night before came to be known as All Hallows’ Eve, and this holiday eventually became the modern Halloween we now know. Many of the traditions we now associate with Halloween were carried down from these celebrations. Here’s where these customs come from.

Trick-or-Treating

As with many modern rituals and traditions, it is widely debated how the practice of trick-or-treating came about. There are two main theories. The first is that it comes from the Samhain ritual. During Samhain, people believed that the portal between this world and the next would open, and the dead would come back to Earth. People would leave offerings outside their door to appease the spirits, and to welcome back deceased relatives. Some would take this further by setting a place at the table for their loved ones.

The second theory is that it started with the tradition of people (primarily children) going from door to door, asking for ‘soul cakes’. In exchange, the beggars would pray for the souls of those who gave them the food and their loved ones.

Halloween Costumes

Again, this is a custom of which the origin is argued. Some believe that it started with the act of “mumming” and “guising,” which is when people would dress in disguises and go door to door asking for food. Others say this started on All Saints’ Day, as a genuine tribute to the Saints.

Others still believe that the custom started during Samhain, as a way for people to disguise themselves from the dead. Many people feared the spirits they believed would cross over on the night of Samhain, and they believed that if they disguised themselves, the ghosts would believe they were also dead, and would not cause them any harm.

Jack-o-Lanterns

Originally, Jack-o-Lanterns were made from turnips. The tradition changed to pumpkins when the Irish moved to the USA and couldn’t find any turnips, so they changed to the fruit. Unsurprisingly, there are many stories surrounding the origins of why we carve pumpkins. One is that they were used to scare away evil spirits. Another, very popular story, revolves around the legend of Stingy Jack.

Stingy Jack was a drunken farmer who attracted The Devil with his mean, selfish ways. However, he outsmarted the devil three times in his life, tricking him into agreeing to never claim his soul. When he died, Jack was barred from Heaven because of his evil actions. The Devil, smarting from being tricked but keeping his promise, would not allow him into Hell. He gave Jack just a lump of burning coal and sent him away. It is said that Jack hollowed out a turnip and put the burning piece of coal inside, and has been using this lantern to guide him as he has roamed the Earth alone ever since. The Irish referred to the figure as ‘Jack of the Lantern’, and this eventually evolved into simply ‘Jack O’ Lantern’.

Understanding Dreams: Running Late

Welcome back to our ‘Understanding Dreams’ series, where we take a look at the most common subjects people dream about, and what they mean for us in our waking lives. This month, we are looking at dreams about running late. These dreams can often cause a lot of stress and anxiety, as nobody likes the feeling of being late for something important. They are also often a result of pre-existing stress; if you have a dream about being late, it is often a strong reflection of what is currently going on in your day-to-day life. Here’s what it means if you dream about being late.

Dreams in which you are late are often very frustrating because the reason you are late is not your fault. Usually, people dream that they are trying their hardest to reach their desired destination, but obstacles keep getting in their way. No matter how hard they try, they cannot get to where they want to go. These dreams cause a lot of stress and anxiety, and can lead to a poor night’s sleep, and leave us feeling even more tired and unrested in the morning. However, if you have this type of dream, you are often already feeling tense and anxious about something, even if you weren’t fully aware of these feelings; this dream is your subconscious sending you a message that you need to do something to tackle these emotions and the situations causing them.

Dreams about running late because you’re unprepared

Often, this dream symbolises that you are up against a tight deadline in your real life, and are worried that you may not make it. It’s very common for people with high-power and fast-paced jobs such as journalists to have this dream, as they are constantly working against the clock, and this stress carries over to their subconsciousness while they sleep. However, it’s also common for people who have recently taken on bigger responsibilities, such as an important work project, or a new role altogether, or even began studying again and suddenly have assignments to consider. This new part of your life may be making you feel anxious and overwhelmed, and like you’re going to fail.

In our waking lives, if we’re late and it’s our fault, it’s usually because we were unprepared. If you’re late for an important appointment, or for work or school, it could be because you failed to set your alarm clock, or you didn’t think about what you were going to wear beforehand, or you missed your bus or train because you weren’t paying enough attention to the time. If this is you, then having a dream in which you are running late is often a sign that you need to work on being better prepared for things in your real life. You may not feel like your lack of preparation is stressing you out (it may actually be because you’re so laid-back that you’re constantly late), but this dream is a clear sign that somewhere deep down, this is causing your subconscious to panic.

Dreams about running late because of external obstacles

If you are somebody who is usually well-prepared and on time in real life, and are still dreaming that you are late through unpreparedness, it could be a sign that you are dealing with a situation in your daily life that you are not sure if you can handle. You are probably feeling like you are not ready to take on such a big task, perhaps because you don’t have the knowledge, skills, or tools to complete it. You feel as though you are rushing towards a deadline that is impossible to meet, and there is nothing you can do. If this is you, it’s time to ask for help. Look for somebody who has the knowledge, or who can provide you with the correct tools you need to complete your task, and if possible, can help you complete it before the deadline looms.

If in the dream you are trying your hardest to reach your destination on time, but are being prevented from doing so because of external obstacles, this could be a sign that you are feeling like you are being held back by something or somebody in your waking life. You are ready and willing to do what you need to do and meet any deadlines you might have, but something else is getting in the way of your success. You most likely feel very frustrated at this situation and are unsure how you can get around these obstacles and reach your goal. If this is you, it’s time to take a step back and assess the situation, and figure out what it is that is standing in your way.

Feeling like you’re falling behind

In a deeper, less literal sense, this dream could suggest that you are feeling as though you are running out of time in your daily life. Perhaps you feel as though you’re not living up to the expectations of your younger self, or those around you, and aren’t where you thought you would be at this point in your life. You may be struggling to advance in your career, or are still unsure quite what it is you want to do. Or maybe you’re feeling like you’re falling behind in your personal life; we reach a certain age when we are surrounded by people getting married, buying houses, and starting families. If you’re not quite there yet, and you’re surrounded by people who seem to ‘have it together’, this dream may be your subconscious telling you that you feel as though you are falling behind and that you’re racing against the clock.

If this is the case, it’s important to remember that life is not a race. There is no set timeline for when you must do certain things. Some people have a clear idea of what they want to do in their careers from an early age, and quickly work their way up the ladder. Others find their passion later, and some never do, and simply work to earn money. Some people meet their soulmates in their teens, whereas others don’t meet until much later, and others are simply happily single. No matter where you are in your life, don’t compare yourself to others. You’re not falling behind, because it’s not a competition. The only person you should worry about is yourself. If you do want to change your life and make progress in certain areas, then take some time to reflect on where you’re at right now, and what you can change to move forward. Once you know what to do, go and do it, and allow yourself some time to achieve those goals without feeling pressure to meet a certain deadline.

How to cope with anxiety – A video from Olivia Remes

Today is Mental Health Awareness Day and in this video, Olivia Remes (University of Cambridge) talks about one of the most prevalent mental health disorders, Anxiety.

Anxiety affects around 1 out of every 14 people around the world. This can result in other conditions such as depression and often increases the risk for suicide. Alarmingly, very few people who often need treatment for anxiety actually receive it.

In the video, Olivia discusses how to cope with anxiety and looks at ways to unravel and treat this health disorder.

By allowing ourselves to believe that what happens in life is comprehensive, meaningful and manageable, one can significantly improve their risk of developing anxiety disorders.

Arguing that treatments such as psychotherapy and medication exist and often result in poor outcome and high rates of relapses, she will emphasise the importance of harnessing strength in ourselves as we modify our problem-coping mechanisms.

What Does it Mean When You Find a Feather?

We often receive the question, ‘What does it mean when you find a feather?’ Have you ever been walking down the street and come across a beautiful feather that couldn’t possibly have come from a bird? Or maybe you’ve somehow found a feather in your house, even though there was no way it could possibly have got there? These feathers are signs from the spiritual world, and finding one is a message from an Angel who is looking over you.

It is very common to find a feather if you have recently lost somebody close to you, on a special date that relates to that person, or if you’re going through a particularly tough or trying time and need guidance. Some people simply take the feather as a sign that the Angel is close to them, and are happy to know that they are being looked after. However, finding a feather often means more than simply having a guardian Angel; each feather has a specific meaning or theme depending on its colour. When you find a feather, you should pay close attention to what colour it is, to determine what your guardian Angel is trying to tell you. Here are some interpretations of the most common coloured feathers that people find and what they mean.

White Feathers

White feathers are the most common kind of feather that people find, and are a clear sign that an Angel is close by, looking out for you. The colour of purity and strength, a white feather is a message from your Angel that you are safe and protected. It is also a sign that your loved ones are safe and happy in the spiritual world, and are looking out for you and your life. White is the colour of peace, and this feather is a lovely sign that those who have left this realm and move onto the next are at peace and are happy; you can stop worrying about your loved ones, and know they are safe and well.

Blue Feathers

Blue is the colour of communication, peace, and protection. If you find a blue feather, it is a sign from your Angel that you need to listen more and open up your mind and your heart to your subconscious. You may be running around leading a busy life with no time to stop and reflect, and because of this you are possibly missing important signs from your spiritual self, or your loved ones in the spiritual world. This feather is a sign to slow down and listen to yourself, and the world around you. Meditation would help at this time; taking an opportunity to simply sit still and connect to your subconscious will help you.

Pink Feathers

Pink is the colour of love and affection. You’ve seen pink love hearts plastered across Valentine’s cards and other romantic gifts and tokens. Finding a pink feather is a sign from your guardian Angel that you are loved, and that their love is unconditional. It is a sign that you have the love and support of the universe and your Angels above, and that you shouldn’t be afraid to take risks because they’re watching out for you.

Purple Feathers

The colour purple is related to higher power and the spiritual realm, and finding a purple feather is a message that you need to become more connected to your inner, spiritual self. Similar to the blue feather, this is a sign that you should take some time to pause and reflect on yourself and your life, as well as the world around you. You may be missing vital clues from the universe, or ignoring your gut instincts in situations. Spend some time meditating and open up your mind to what the universe has to offer.

Orange Feathers

Orange is a very vibrant and passionate colour, and relates to physical energy, sexuality, and love. Finding an orange feather is a sure sign from your Angel that you are about to experience a strong physical connection to somebody. You may be whipped up into a whirlwind romance, and this is a sign to enjoy it while it lasts.

Yellow Feathers

Yellow is the colour of sunshine and happiness, and these feathers usually appear when you need a reminder to let your hair down and have fun. Life can get hard sometimes, and with juggling our careers, families, friends, and other responsibilities, it can be difficult to find time to simply relax and enjoy ourselves. If you find a yellow feather, it is a sign from your guardian Angel that you need to give yourself more time to enjoy life, and stop taking things so seriously.

Green Feathers

Green is the colour of nature and emotions. It is also the colour of luck, and if you come across a green feather, it is a message from your Angel that your luck is about to change. There is a strong tie to love and relationships, so you may be about to meet somebody special and begin a romance. It is also the colour of healing, and if you have been going through difficult times, finding a green feather suggests that those times are over, and you are beginning to heal and move on.

Red Feathers

Red is the colour of courage and bravery, and these feathers are often found when you’re going through a difficult time and need a little nudge of strength and comfort. Our guardian Angels are there to look out for us and protect us, and never is this needed more than when we are going through trying times. If you’re facing a difficult situation that is causing worry or stress, a red feather is like a gift of hope and inspiration, and is a message from your guardian Angel to hold on and have faith in yourself. You have the ability to face any challenge and overcome it.

Brown Feathers

Brown is the colour of the Earth and is incredibly grounding. If you come across a brown feather, it is a sign from your guardian Angel to focus on your roots, and your homelife. Finding a brown feather is a good sign, and suggests that you will hear good news soon, perhaps of an engagement or a pregnancy.

Grey Feathers

The colour between black and white, grey symbolises neutrality and peace. People usually find a grey feather when they are at a crossroads and have a big decision to make, and it is a sign from their guardian Angel that the answer isn’t simply black and white. If you find a grey feather, your guardian Angel is telling you to be careful with your choices and try to remain neutral; don’t let your heart rule your head, and make sure that you look at the situation from all sides before you make a choice.

Black Feathers

A black feather is a warning sign, and a message of protection from your Angel. If you find a black feather, your guardian Angel is sending you an urgent message to be careful and watch your back; there may be danger coming your way. Black feathers repel negative energy and act as a spiritual armour against forces that may be working to cause you harm.

Questions of the week 13th July 2018

Will I find friendship in the near future?
Asked by Christine

I am picking up a yes and something to do with a library. The person could be a librarian, live near a library, be an avid reader or own lots of books. They could also be a writer. Definitely yes and around October time.

Am I going to move home and will I be single forever?!!
Asked by Annia

I used my pendulum to answer your question. You will move home, more towards November/December time. Within one year you will find new love and ironically, I see you moving again very soon after that. You will be incredibly happy.

How do I get over my ex? Plus get him out my head completely like he has with me?
Asked by Deborah Park

You need to ground and centre yourself. Meditation and breathing exercises can help. Try this

  1. Sit comfortably, relax and close your eyes. Clear your mind.
  2. Inhale on a count of 5. Hold on a count of 5 and exhale slowly, again on a count of 5. Repeat this about 3 or 4 times.
  3. While you are doing this you may feel like you are melting, you become very relaxed. You may also experience shivers or a tingle.
  4. Now you are relaxed, imagine a cord connecting you to your ex. Once you see it, imagine cutting it with large scissors.
  5. Repeat this as often as necessary and you will find you think of him less and less. One day you will suddenly remember you forgot to do it…that’s when you know it’s worked.

How can I be happy & love?
Asked by Tera

Happiness is fleeting, it is the residue and memory that remains with us. You can find happiness in the simplest of things everyday. Be happy when you hear a bird sing, smile and say thank you. Even if it rains, smile and show thanks. That act opens you up to be a “Happiness and love receptor” You will attract happiness and hot on it’s heels you will have love…I guarantee it

Will I attract love and if so will this be someone I was once with or someone new? Thank you xx
Asked by Ursula

Of course, the answer is yes, but remember, thoughts are energy. What you think, you attract. Visualize yourself being in love and experience the feeling that being in love brings. The feeling makes you feel wonderful. By doing this you will attract new love. I do have a very good feeling for you for the end of the Summer, around the September time. Stay positive.

Romance on the Internet – Beware the Dating Scammers

There are some of us who have sort romance and love online. There’s nothing wrong with that. We are all grown-ups, we can make our own choices and decisions. There are thousands of nice, genuine people out there, just waiting to love and be loved.

Sadly, there are also many out there waiting, like patient spiders on the edge of their web of deceit, lies and manipulation. The innocent and emotionally vulnerable who land on these webs can become trapped, drained both emotionally and financially and left bereft of everything, including their self-respect and self-esteem. Not daring to trust again.

In the last ten years, online dating has grossed over two billion in revenue and is a growing, lucrative business. Offering chances for people to meet online and hopefully, face to face.

The only issue with online dating is that you don’t really know who you are talking to. It’s up to you to find out, do a little research and, if they are legitimate, pursue your romantic partner with an element of confidence.

I am not here to talk about the nice people, I am here to talk about the scammers. The “not so” nice people. The dating website spiders.

My Online Dating Experience

I too have used a dating website. This is where I met my lovely partner that I have been with for the last five years, but, it is also where a scammer crossed paths with me. Yes, I said crossed paths with me!

A potted history, my ex-husband walked out when I was in my mid-fifties and left me emotionally in pieces. I was vulnerable and needed to feel loved and wanted.

I would never have classed myself as being the “online dating type” but my ex-sister in law persuaded me to try on. She told me “It’s free. If you don’t like it, you can always leave”

online dating lady using laptopSo I tried it. One Thursday night I registered on a site suggested by her. Almost immediately I had likes, winks, kisses and messages.

I was flattered, excited and intrigued. I chatted to some, exchanging niceties. Then the man on the horse appeared. Resplendent in a bandana and sporting sunglasses. He said hello and told me his name was John Michael. After a while, he asked if I had instant messaging. I didn’t, but he said it would be a good idea to use it. I innocently followed his advice.

The following 48 hours were filled with chatting online. He lifted my spirits and made me feel good about myself. At the end of the second day, he told me he loved me and couldn’t live without me. He also said he was a millionaire and, although American, he was living in London. He gave me an address as well.

I am psychic and all of my senses were saying… STOP, but the vulnerable me was lapping up his every word.

I did back up a bit and stop. There was something off, not right. The address he gave me didn’t look like a London address, so I Googled it. It was a pensioners bungalow in Great Yarmouth. *ALARM*

I became very cautious and decided to go with my gut. I asked him questions, which he answered, but none of it was traceable. The big “NO” for me was when he began asking for money, which I did not have. I said why couldn’t he buy what he needed, being a millionaire. He told me he was waiting for a payment and could not access funds. I refused him and he got aggressive with me.

I won’t go into the rest of this because you can guess that he was using emotional leverage to get what he wanted and when refused, accused me of not trusting and loving him. After all “I have never lied to you Damsel” REALLY!!!!!

He would go missing for days on end with no rhyme or reason. I would get emails mentioning things we had never discussed. His excuses were flimsy.

Research Your New “Love Interest”

research your new found love interest - online dating scammers - google screenshot

I dug and I dug for weeks, researching this man and discovered that he was also talking to a lady in the States who had caved in and given him money for an orphanage he was building “REALLY”!!!!

At one point he asked for my address so that he could send a shipment of parts to my house for collection. I did refuse but sometime later got a call from HM Customs saying they had a pallet of computer equipment but no address, just my phone number. I told them the whole story about John Michael and “The Scam” They asked if I wanted to assist, just once? I agreed. I had to find out where the shipment was going once it left my house. They sent approximately £500,000 worth of expensive, high-end computer hardware. The courier who picked it up left his paperwork on the floor, which I photographed and photocopied. It was going to an exporter in Hackney, London, who specializes in shipping to Nigeria.

“WOW” Customs were very very interested in that. Not only had he imported the stuff, he had put that it was a “gift” Hmmm!!!! The name he gave me and the name he gave them was not the same.

Suffice it to say, this man did not care two hoots about me. He was using me whether I wanted him to or not. HM Customs became very interested in him, as did the police in LA, Arizona, London and my local police were informed as well.

Several weeks went by and my scammer phoned me. He had the audacity to ask me why I was angry with him. After all, he had never lied.

This is a short version of all that happened to me. I now recognize the signs and can spot a scammer a million miles away.

How can you spot an online dating scammer?

  1. They have very detailed profiles.
  2. They often say they are American.
  3. They often tell you they have a place in the UK.
  4. They are either in the military, business or engineering.
  5. More often than not they say they are widowed.
  6. They tell you they are wealthy but can’t get their hands on their cash right now.
  7. They ask you to leave the website and message them using another program type like Yahoo messenger.
  8. If you ask them for selfies or other photos they can give excuses. Also, if you ask to video chat, they give excuses.
  9. They may ask you for money for them because of a sick relative or to help them out of a tight spot, but they always promise to pay you back.
  10. They become aggressive if you refuse, using emotional blackmail to get what they want.
  11. Despite, supposedly, being university educated, they will often be a sentence with the word “Am”

The list can go on and on.

If you are vulnerable and looking for love on the Internet, do so, by all means, but get some savvy, it can save your emotional life and your bank account as well.

I am adding some links for you to look at. Please do, they are very informative.

There are many more helpful websites out there, these are just a few.

Go out there, find love, be happy but love yourself first.

You are worthy and will find that special someone, not everyone on dating websites are bad, but sadly, some are, so tread carefully, don’t be drawn into the spider’s web and have fun.

Your motto is “Use My Savvy”, meaning, if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it could be a parrot pretending to be a duck. Get it?

Question of the Week: How to Know if You’ve Found Your Soulmate

Every week we answer a question from one of our community members right here on the blog. This week we heard from Amber, who recently met somebody she believes could be her soulmate. Here’s our advice on how to know if you’ve found your soulmate.

Q – Hi, Amber here. I recently met an amazing guy and we’ve been on a few dates. Things are moving really fast which usually freaks me out, but with him, I don’t mind. I really think he might be my soulmate but I might just be getting excited. How do you know if you’ve found your soulmate? Please help!

A – Hi, Amber. Ah, that sweet feeling of falling in love! It’s such a lovely time, so enjoy it. Who’s to say it’s moving fast? If you’re both comfortable with the pace of the relationship, it is going at the perfect speed.

There is a lot of debate about what a soulmate is, and whether we can have only one or many possible soulmates in our lifetime. Soulmates are generally defined as one soul in two bodies, and finding your soulmate makes you ‘whole’. I personally believe that we can have multiple soulmates in our lives, and these can be romantic or platonic soulmates. Most people think that a soulmate has to be a romantic interest, but you can also have family members or friends who are soulmates.

Many people believe that when you find your soulmate, you will immediately know. They think that just like in the movies, you will lock eyes with somebody across a room and suddenly the crowds will part and you will just know that you have found ‘your person’. However, this isn’t true. It isn’t always obvious at first that you’ve met your soulmate. It may take weeks, months or even years for you to realise that a person is your soulmate. However, there are a few signs that you can look out for to help you spot if they are your soulmate or not. Here’s our advice on how to know if you’ve found your soulmate.

You feel as though you’ve known them forever

The first and most obvious sign that you’ve met your soulmate is that you feel like you’ve known them forever, even if you’ve only just met. Many believe that soulmates have met before, in a past life, and are destined to be drawn to each other again in this one. When you meet somebody and feel as though you’ve met them before, or have known them for a lot longer, it could be a sign that your souls are recognising each other from a past meeting.

In many cases, when soulmates finally meet, they actually realise that they have actually been in the same place or places before. Some people realise they lived or worked closeby, or frequented the same areas, crossing paths but never meeting. This adds to the feeling that you’ve both been there in each other’s lives all along.

You feel calm around them

Many people believe that they have found their soulmate because the person makes them giddy and excited, and always gives them butterflies and makes their heart pound when they see them. Though these are all things we enjoy when we’re in a new relationship, the opposite is actually true when you meet your soulmate. Around your true soulmate, you will feel calm and peaceful, sure in the knowledge that this is the person for you, and that you can be completely comfortable with them. Of course, they will still give you butterflies from time to time, but there will be no panic or confusion, or wondering if they like you or not. With your soulmate, you’ll just know.

You can be completely yourself around them

It’s not uncommon for people to put on somewhat of a performance at the beginning of a relationship; you hide the ‘real’ you and be whoever you think the person you’re dating will like. However, when you meet your soulmate, you will find yourself relaxing and feeling like you can be 100% yourself around them. This is partly because you feel like you already know each other, so there is no point pretending, and also because you know that they will love and accept you for everything you are.

You challenge and support each other

A soulmate will help you be the very best version of yourself. They won’t be content with letting you simply float along in life; they want what you want for yourself, and they’ll make sure that you get it. A true soulmate will challenge you and support you, and vice versa.

You’re on the same page

You and your soulmate will understand each other and will want the same things. You’ll have the same morals and beliefs, and want the same things for the future. You’ll feel like two puzzle pieces that fit perfectly, and you will have no doubt that you’re meant to be together. You’re on the same page, and you know where you want your story to go. If you do have disagreements, you will be able to compromise easily and work together to find a solution.

Question of the Week: How to Get Over the Loss of a Friend

Every week we receive questions from our community members, asking for advice on topics of life, love, career and more. This week we heard from Heather who is struggling with how to get over the loss of a friend. Here is our advice.

Q – Hi, I’m Heather. My best friend and I had a huge fight a few months ago and haven’t spoken since. She really hurt me and I don’t want to be friends any longer, but I’m finding it really hard to forget about it and move on. We were friends for a long time so it’s hard to get used to not having her around. What can I do to make it easier to move on?

A – Hi, Heather. Thank you so much for your question. I’m sorry to hear you’re going through this. Losing a friend is always hard, especially a best friend. Our friends are the extended family members that we get to choose and they are there beside us during all of the ups and downs of life, celebrating when things go well and supporting us through the bad stuff.

A friend breakup is even harder than a romantic one in a lot of ways, so it can be even harder to get over. When you break up with a romantic partner, you have your best friend to console you and help you through it. With a friend breakup though, this is even harder. However, it’s not impossible. Here is our advice on how to get over the loss of a friend.

Accept what happened

Moving on from the end of a relationship is very similar to coping with grief after the death of a loved one, and so you’ll probably go through the usual stages when moving on from the loss of your friendship. The final stage of grief is acceptance. It’s important to accept what has happened and stop yourself from wondering ‘what if?’. Wondering what would happen if things had gone differently will only serve to drive you crazy and stop you from moving on.

Allow yourself to feel

It can be tempting to ignore or deny how you’re feeling and pretend that you’re fine with what has happened, but this will only prolong the process of moving on. Suppressed feelings always surface eventually so it’s best to face and deal with them head-on.

Allow yourself to feel sad about the end of your friendship. Your friend hurt you, so you’re allowed to be angry, too. It may be hard at first, but letting yourself feel your feelings is healthy and helps you process what has happened. The most important thing is how you manage and express these feelings.

Write it all down

Expressing and letting out your feelings is necessary when you’re hurt, but it’s important to do it in a healthy way. When you’re hurt, it’s tempting to send angry messages to hurt that person back. However, this will only make you feel worse in the long run.

One good way to get your feelings off your chest is to write them all down in a letter. Write a letter to your friend telling them exactly how you feel, holding nothing back. Release all of your feelings, and then destroy the letter. This is a very cathartic process that helps you feel better by saying exactly what you need to without any further consequences.

Keep yourself busy

Without your friend, you’ll probably find yourself with a lot of extra time that would usually be spent with them. It’s important not to spend this time doing nothing because that will lead to you dwelling on things and feeling worse. Instead, fill up this time with fun and exciting things to keep you busy and distracted.
You could join a class or take up a hobby that you’ve always wanted to do, or you could spend more time with family and other friends. Anything that keeps you busy and your mind off your ex-friend is good, and after a while it will feel natural to not have them there.

Make new friends

You don’t necessarily need to make a new best friend straight away. Missing your best friend doesn’t mean you should replace them. However, spending more time with other friends and making new ones is always good. Joining a class is a great way to make new friends. Doing something that is out of your comfort zone helps people form quick and strong bonds and makes for great friendships.

One silver lining of having the extra time is that you can spend more time focusing and nourishing your other friendships. When we spend so much time with one friend, our other friendships can often be neglected a little. Now is the time to reach out to those who you may have grown distance from recently and reconnect. You never know, one of your other friends may grow to become your new best friend.

Understanding Dreams: Being Naked

Welcome back to our ‘Understanding Dreams’ series, where we examine some of our most common dream themes and delve into what they mean for us in both our subconscious minds and our daily, waking lives. This month’s dream theme is being naked. Most of us have had the experience of going about our daily business like normal in a dream, and then suddenly looking down to find ourselves completely naked. Maybe you’re at work, in a very important meeting; or you’re at the front of an assembly at school; or perhaps you’re doing your shopping at the supermarket. One minute everything is fine, then the next you’re mortified and trying to cover yourself up while everyone around you laughs.

This is a very common dream that usually causes massive relief when the dreamer wakes up. However, it can also cause much embarrassment and maybe even some stress. This is natural of course because nobody wants to find themselves naked in public. But what do these dreams mean? Here we examine the reasons behind these dreams and what they mean for your life.

How does being naked make you feel?

The first question you need to ask yourself is how you feel when you’re naked. Do you feel exposed and vulnerable? Or do you feel free and unburdened? How you feel about the situation has a big effect on what the dream could mean for your life.

Are you feeling vulnerable?

Many people use clothes to make a statement and express their personality, whereas others see them as a way to cover up and hide who they are. If you feel vulnerable when naked in your dream, it’s a sign that you’re feeling the same way in real life.

People often feel vulnerable when they’ve put themselves out there for the world to see them, exactly as they are. Maybe you’ve brought down your metaphorical walls in a relationship and let your partner see exactly who you are and how you feel. It’s a very raw and sometimes scary feeling, leaving you feeling exposed and at risk. However, being vulnerable in a relationship is usually a good thing as it allows you to create a deeper connection with your partner.

If in your dream you’re feeling terrified and are trying to cover yourself up, it could mean that you are scared of revealing too much of yourself in real life and being ridiculed or rejected. If you’re feeling like this, try to examine why you’re feeling so scared. Is somebody else making you feel unworthy? Or are you simply used to building walls to keep people at arm’s length? If this is the case, you may benefit from wearing your heart on your sleeve for a change.

If you’re feeling exposed and embarrassed

Another possible reason that you feel exposed and embarrassed by being naked is that you are hiding a secret and are scared of it being revealed. There’s a reason we say ‘the naked truth’, and that’s because nakedness is honest and leaves us with nowhere to hide.

If you’re hiding a secret, it is probably playing on your mind a lot during the day, and dreaming about being naked and exposed is simply your fears of the secret being revealed spilling over into your subconscious thoughts. Think about why you’re keeping this secret? Is it yours, or that of somebody else’s? Is keeping the secret causing you stress and anxiety? Would it be better for you if you revealed the secret? Perhaps you could confide in somebody you trust, who wouldn’t tell anybody else? Just by telling one trustworthy person could help you feel as though you have got it off your chest, and help you stop worrying about it so much.

Do you feel happy and free?

Dreams in which you’re naked and happy or proud, or both, are much rarer than those in which you’re embarrassed. However, they are definitely a good omen. For some people, being naked isn’t embarrassing or vulnerable at all. These people may feel liberated by the lack of clothes, and free to be their true selves. If in your dream, you’re happily naked, it could symbolise that you are very comfortable with yourself and who you are in real life.

Being comfortable in your own skin and being unfazed by seeing you is a sign that you are very confident and capable. Perhaps you’re succeeding at work and feeling very strong and powerful. Or perhaps you’ve allowed yourself to take down your guard and show your true feelings for your partner, and it has lead to a happy, healthy and loving relationship. Whatever it is, take this dream as a great sign that things are going well for you.

Question of the Week: How to Attract Love

Once a week, we answer a question that has been submitted by one of our community members, right here on the blog. This week we heard from Andy, who has been single for a while and is hoping to get back into the dating game and attract love into his life.

Q – Hi, Andy here. I went through a bad divorce a few years ago and have been single ever since. It took me a long time to get over my ex-wife and I wasn’t interested in dating for a few years, but now I’m ready to move on and get back out there. The problem is, I have no idea how. My mates have told me to get on some dating websites but I’m not sure. I’m not very confident so I’m rubbish at talking to women. Do you have any advice? Thanks!

A – Hi Andy,
It’s so lovely to hear from you. Thank you for submitting a question about love from a man’s point of view; those are rare! Your situation is, unfortunately, a common one. Many people who experience bad breakups find it hard to move on and find love again, and can be single for a long time. However, it’s great that you feel like you’re ready to get back out there and meet somebody. It’s natural to be nervous and unsure of how to attract love back into your life, but we have a few tips to make it a little easier for you. Read on to find out some of the best and easiest ways to attract love into your life.

Love yourself first

It may sound like a cliché, but they are popular for a reason; they’re always true. If you want to attract love into your life, you have to love yourself first. If you feel unattractive and unlovable, that is the vibe that you will give out to others, too. You are the most important person in your life, so it’s important that you love yourself. People think that loving themselves is conceited or vain, but this isn’t true. Simply knowing your own worth and having respect and love for yourself is healthy. The way you treat yourself sets the bar for how everyone else should treat you too.

If you’re feeling low on confidence, show yourself some self-care. Treat yourself to a new haircut and a few new clothes that make you feel good when you’re wearing them. It’s surprising how much confidence just a little change can make. Another way to increase your confidence is by repeating some positive affirmations to yourself. Positive affirmations are a great way to practice the Law of Attraction, which is the idea that your thoughts affect what happens in your life. Give it a try today.

Know what you are looking for

What is your ideal partner like? Do you have a type? Do you like people with specific interests? When looking for love, it’s a good idea to know exactly what you are looking for. I’m not talking about looks; though we all have certain preferences when it comes to who we find attractive, our partners often surprise us by not being at all what we imagined. However, what’s important is their personality, and how compatible it is to yours.

Though it’s true that sometimes opposites attract, it’s important that you have at least a few things in common with your potential love interest. Make a list of your personality traits and your interests, and then make a list of what you would like your significant other to have. Now you know what you’re looking for, you can begin your search!

Put yourself out there

Though I tend to agree that great love often finds you when you’re least expecting it, I also think that you have to be available and ready for love to find you. If you want to attract love, you need to be visible and easy to find. That means putting yourself out there.

Online dating sites and apps have become increasingly popular over the last decade or so. They’re not for everybody, but many people have found love and happiness through using them. The ‘matching’ system that most use is a good way to find people with similar interests to you, and this common ground helps get conversations started. Even if nothing happens in real life, at least using an app will give you some good practice at talking to people, and will get you back into the game.

If you’re not interested in online dating, focus on opportunities to meet new people in real life. Do you have a hobby that causes you to meet people? If not, why not take one up? Not only will it help you meet new people, it will automatically give you an interesting topic for conversation.

Have a Love Tarot Card Reading

If you’re unsure about what’s in store in your romantic life, a Love Tarot Card reading could help shed some light and give you a little insight into what you can expect. Maybe a new partner is just around the corner, and you just need a little encouragement to go and find them. A Love Tarot reading can answer any questions you have, and give you the knowledge and confidence you need to attract love into your life.

How to Spring Clean Your Life

The arrival of Spring brings with it a time of rebirth, change and growth, both physically and spiritually. As we say goodbye to Winter, we see nature beginning to bloom, and the world seems a little brighter once more. As nature flourishes around us, it is a perfect opportunity to take a look at our lives and see how we too can change and grow. Everybody has heard of the idea of a Spring Clean, where we take the time to fully clean and freshen up our houses, throwing away things we don’t need and getting our living spaces more organised and ready for the new season. However, have you heard of spring cleaning your life?

Similar to the traditional Spring Clean, this is simply taking some time to really pause and look at your life, and take steps to make sure that everything is as you want it to be. This includes getting organised, getting rid of things you don’t need, and setting goals that will help you flourish and be happy. Here are our tips on how to spring clean your life.

Step it up at work

We spend the majority of our time at work, so it’s important that our job makes us feel happy and fulfilled. Are you where you want to be in your career? Or could things be better? Perhaps you’ve been thinking of asking for a raise, or applying for a promotion, but have been too nervous to go for it. Or maybe you’re bored and looking for a new challenge, but haven’t got around to looking for a new job yet. Whatever will help you be happier in the workplace, now is the time to go for it.

Even if you’re perfectly content with your current role, you don’t want to get too comfortable. It’s easy to get comfortable in a job you’re good at, but comfort leads to boredom, and boredom leads to unhappiness. It’s important to keep things fresh and interesting, and that requires a new challenge from time to time.

If you’re not looking for a new role, why not ask your boss for a new, challenging project? Taking on new responsibilities and learning new skills helps you keep your mind sharp and prevents you from living on autopilot from 9-5. Your job should be rewarding, not just something you do for 8 or so hours every day that adds nothing to your life.

Reevaluate your relationships

The people we spend time with affect our lives in many ways. When we’re not at work, we’re usually spending time with our partners, families, and friends. It’s important that these relationships make us happy, so if somebody is having a negative impact on your life, it’s time to think about letting them go.

We change as we grow older and it’s inevitable that our friendships with change too. Sometimes we simply outgrow certain people and relationships, and it becomes a strain to try to hold onto something just because there is a lot of history there. It may be sad, but in these cases, it’s better to let nature take its course, and let these relationships come to their natural end.

Other relationships you should consider letting go of are any with people who bring only negativity to your life. Do you have a friend who constantly makes you feel bad about yourself? This is what’s known as a ‘toxic friendship’, and you should let that person go for the sake of your own happiness. Your time is valuable, and you should spend it with people who bring you joy and love.

Are you happy in love?

On the subject of relationships, you should take some time to focus on your love life whilst spring cleaning your life. If you’re in a relationship, ask yourself if you’re really happy. If the answer is yes, that’s great! Now ask yourself, what can you do to make it even better? How can you make yourself and your partner feel as loved and as happy as possible?

If the answer is no, it’s time to figure out why, and what to do about it. Do you need to make changes to make the relationship work better? Or is it time to decide if you want to be in the relationship at all? The decision to end a relationship is obviously a difficult and sad one, but if you’re not happy or the relationship isn’t serving you, then ending it will ultimately lead to something better, and you will thank yourself later.

Give your body a boost

Did you make a bunch of resolutions in January to eat healthier and exercise every day? Did you stick to those resolutions, or have you slid back into old habits? If so, no need to worry! Now the days are getting longer and warmer, it’s the perfect time to set new goals, and make them stick.

As well as trying to eat healthier and cut out too many snacks and takeaways, Spring is a great time to take up a new exercise routine. Figure out what your goals are, and find something to suit. Do you want to lose weight or tone up? Consider joining a gym or starting a running programme. Or, are you simply looking for a fun way to be more active? If so, consider joining an exercise class, or even a dance class. Take a friend and enjoy it together, or go solo and use it as a way to meet new people while also getting fit.

As well as diet and exercise, it’s important to remember to give your body some extra love and care occasionally. Run yourself a bath, put on a face mask, or treat yourself to a massage. And whilst you’re looking after yourself physically, remember to give yourself some mental and spiritual relaxation too. Take some time for yourself to do things you enjoy, such as reading a book, watching a favourite movie, or simply giving yourself some time to lie down and listen to some music.

Spruce up your finances

Spring cleaning your life is all about getting organised and cutting out the unnecessary things. One of the most important parts of our lives we need to be on top of is our finances. Take some time to evaluate your financial situation, and how you can improve it.

Go through your accounts and see how much money you are earning, and how much you are spending. Make note of all of the unnecessary things you spend money on, and how much you could save if you stopped needlessly spending. Set yourself a budget, and make sure you’re saving a little each month. Seeing a savings account grow is extremely satisfying, and you never know when you’ll need the extra cash.

Question of the Week: How to be More Present

Every week, we receive questions from our community members asking advice on love, careers, friendships and life in general. We choose one of those questions to answer right here on the blog, in the hopes that the advice we share will be helpful for others in our community, too. This week we heard from Kara, who wants to know how to be more present.

Q – Sometimes I find it really hard to focus on and enjoy the present moment. I spend a lot of time worrying about the future and simply daydreaming and not concentrating on my day-to-day life in general. Time passes so quickly and I don’t want to miss out on things right now because I’m too focused on other things. Do you have any advice on how to be more present? Thanks, Kara.

A –Hi Kara,
Thanks so much for getting in touch, and for such a great question. Many of us are guilty of daydreaming out days away, and suddenly realising one day that time has passed by without us even really noticing it. None of us want to look back when we’re older and wonder where the time went. Here is our advice on how to be more present in your everyday life, and enjoy the here-and-now.

Shake up the routine

Most of us live our lives in a routine; we get up, go to work, come home and make dinner, spend some time with the family, go to sleep, and repeat the next day. This is natural of course, but it can cause us to live on autopilot. When you do the same thing every day, it becomes second nature and requires little thought, leaving you with lots of time to zone out and daydream the days away.

Shaking up your routine is a great way to make sure you’re paying more attention to your daily life. This may seem difficult when you have a job, family and other responsibilities to take care of every day, but there are some small and simple ways to add something new to your days. Do you usually eat your lunch at your desk or in the canteen at work? Why not go out on your lunch hour once or twice a week? You don’t need to buy an expensive lunch, just take a packed lunch and eat it outside. Or use your lunch hour to go for a walk, or catch up with a friend.

You can also add something to your evenings by doing something different after work. Instead of going home and spending the evening in front of the TV, why not have a mini adventure? Go for a drive or a walk, or pay a friend or family member a surprise visit. Even if it’s just once a week, doing something different with your evening will make your weeks feel fuller and memorable.

Wake up earlier

Another good way to be more present in your everyday life is to give yourself more time. Are you one of those people who press snooze and get up at the very last possible minute so that you only have time to quickly get ready and then rush out of the door to work? Do you allow yourself long lie-ins at the weekend because you’ve been up ‘so early’ during the week? If so, it’s time to spend less time dreaming, and more time awake.

When we’re rushing around, we barely have time to register what we’re doing. When we give ourselves more time to do things, we can slow down and really take notice of ourselves and our actions, and have more chance to enjoy them. It may be difficult to wake up earlier at first, but you’ll soon learn to love it. Wake up half an hour earlier and treat yourself to a delicious breakfast, or simply enjoy a longer shower or even a bath if you give yourself enough time.

Simply having more time to enjoy the little things will help you enjoy and appreciate them more, and you will start your day feeling more relaxed and prepared, which will lead to less stress and worry.

Limit screen time

The internet is such a big part of our lives now, and everyone seems to be online 24/7. Though social media is a useful way to keep in touch and see what our family and friends are doing, spending too much time online can ensure we’re spending more time thinking about other people than ourselves.

Do you pause before you eat a delicious looking meal in a restaurant so you can take a picture of it? Or do you spend time scrolling through news feeds and ignoring the person or people sat opposite you? If so, put your phone away and pay more attention to what’s going on around you. Implement at ‘no phones at the table’ rule, and spend meal times talking to each other about your day instead. Kids (especially teenagers) might resent this at first, but it will get easier and more natural to simply enjoy the time as a family.

Keep a journal

One way to make sure you’re paying attention to your life is to write about it. Keep a journal and spend a few minutes each evening simply writing about what happened during your day, and how you feel about the events. Even if nothing exciting happened, note down the best things about the day, or what you’re most grateful for.
